Many people find themselves trapped in a body, or shall we
say, in a gender that feels uncomfortable to them. They feel on the inside that they are of the opposite gender what their physical body portrays. Or, perhaps
they are confused about their gender. Some
go for sexual reassignment surgery or "gender reassignment surgery"
which is quite expensive and is quite involved. Some just call it the "sex
change" operation. If one can afford this therapy, the person has to be
involved in therapy for at least two years and the last year living as the
"intended gender." Needless
to say, there is tremendous stigma attached to a transgendered person in our
society. People are made fun of, told they are abnormal, bad, etc. Though
it is difficult for many "straight" people to understand the gender
issues many of these people are faced with, they need to be recognized in our
society as people who might be undergoing a great deal of stress early on in
their treatment and given a great deal of support and love, and acceptance for
who they are right where they are.
