I
Am Not Sick I Don't Need Help! by Xavier Amador, Anna-Lica,
Phd. Johanson FIVE STAR Book with Amazon.com "A must read for
families of the mentally ill, Xavier Amador has performed a
tremendous service for families and therapists by translating the
research on insight into mental illness into a highly readable and
very practical book. Family members and therapists who read this
will find their frustration with a "non-compliant" consumer melting
away to be replaced with empathy and compassion, qualities that
will enable them to begin laying the groundwork for a cooperative
relationship with their loved one/client. Step-by-step methods for
developing that relationship are clearly laid out, making this one
of the most helpful, hopeful books to come along in a long time
for those who treat or live with a mentally ill person.
I Am Not Sick...adds to the number of excellent books written for
families of the mentally ill, and, in my opinion, tops the list.
I just wish it had been available 20 years ago when my sister became
ill. I am convinced that she would be much better off today if we
had had access to this information."

The
Outsider : A Journey Into my Father's Struggle with Madness
by Nathaniel Lachenmeyer Written by the son of a man with schizophrenia.
Though he had been estranged from his father for many years, after
his death the son began to explore his father's life. An excellent
read.
"It opened many new doors for me as far as understanding the disease
more. My step-father's brother has the disease. I've always wanted
to have at least a small understanding of his behaviour. Thank God
I was able to get a hold of this book. Not only does it tell the
sad story of a man spinning downward (yet still holding his head
high no matter how adverse his environment becomes) but it gives
the reader a great understanding of the disease and statistics surrounding
it as well. I still cannot get over how he was near death by starvation
yet they held his SSI money. And it has to be mentioned when Charles
Lachenmeyer was asked if he thought he were mentally ill, he stated
that his mental illness was 'love of life and humanity.' Truly amazing!" |

extremely
helpful strategies for coping with Schizophrenia
Reviewer: A reader from Jerusalem, Israel
"Extremely helpful strategies for coping with Schizophrenia in the
family. As a Social Work student in Jerusalem doing an internship
with a population suffering from Schizophrenia, I found this book
provided excellent strategies for the families who must cope with
acute or cronic attacks of Schizophrenia within their families.
It also provides concise, up to date information and research on
causes and treatments of Schizophrenia. I was also impressed with
the organization and clarity of the presentation providing a wealth
of information and coping strategies in a simple and easy to understand
way. I highly recommend this book for the therapist and layman alike."
