Ask the Therapist
DBT and BPD
I am diagnosed with BPD with schizotypal traits. Nevertheless I am married
and I have a fourteen year old daughter still living at home. I guess it's
no surprise that I didn't cope well with my peers when I was in that age
myself. When my 14 year old is hostile in some way, I relive those
dreadful times when I didn't get along with my classmates. This increases
my sensitivity, reactions to hateful environment, while I KNOW that my
daughter is a teenager and I need to be an adult. She's actually doing
quite well, having friends, doing her schoolwork, pursuing her interests
etc. But she does get some therapy concerning her anger. At least that's
the feedback she's given me.
Would it be a helpful thing for me to get Skills
Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder by Marsha
M. Linehan Ph.D.. My therapist
has told my GP that I should not focus so much on treatment, more on living
now. At least that's what my GP has told me when I suggested I get Skills
Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder by Marsha
M. Linehan Ph.D. for dealing with impulsive overeating.
I really can't answer this question, as it's one you must answer for yourself. I will say that, while I am great believer in educating oneself, it is best always to focus on the process of healing, rather than the process itself. Your therapist may be correct in suggesting that you be with your feelings and deal with them, rather than ruminating and projecting.
