My name is Micah and I am a 36 year old female to male.

I actually believe honestly that the diagnosis, though at first a shock has actually improved certain aspects of my life. I have been transitioning quite successfully for 2 years now, and find that I am much more comfortable accepting and knowing what my gender issues have influenced in my life. My family life right now is split. I have a good relationship with my ex husband and my 2 children. I deal with their questions on a daily basis, but they are young (5 and 7) so I believe it's easier for them than an adult. It is one area that I am working on, is trying to transition my children through this easily with me. But like I said, they take it very well. I think that children see a parent much deeper than their gender or physical appearence. On the other hand, my parents are not as accepting and are having a hard time dealing with my transition. I have tried to explain to them GID in the past but they see it more as a fetish or phase than an actual disorder. I do believe however that since my therapy begun and I have taken steps in the direction of so called "curing" my disorder, it seems to be less of a disorder and more just a part of my personality. Hope I worded that right.

Other symptoms: I have had signs of bipolar, mainly the manic side. I'm not sure if it can be cataloged seperately or just as a cause from the GID. I have had episodes in the past of suicidal thoughts and attempts (not for many a years though, thank goodness). During my teenage years, I did experiment with several drugs, was extremely self destructive.

As a extra note, I know for a fact that it's very hard for a biological born female with GID to deal with this at first. It was difficult for me to find information and to open up to anyone, including a therapist, for fear of others opinions. I did however find a great support system and now co moderate a support group for transgendered persons, as well as family and significant others in Colorado Springs. I also am interested in pyschological studies concerning GID and in general.
