My name is Sheila and I am a 58 year old Female.
I am a recovering agoraphobic but am also a volunteer for an organization called 'No Panic'.
For the last 5 years I have been a help-liner, mentor and recovery group leader for No Panic and have taken a few private clients to teach them Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and how to use it to overcome Anxiety disorders. These have included phobias, specific and multi (as in agoraphobia), GAD and panic attacks, OCD both rituals and thoughts.
As I have dealt with both sexes, all ages, and careers as well as sufferers, I am happy to 'talk' to anyone, but would prefer to talk to sufferers if I have to make a choice.
My own history is that I developed agoraphobia during an oppressive and mentally cruel marriage back in the 1970's
As was the case back then, no one knew what to do with me and I was just given medication. My marriage eventually collapsed and the worry of that time gave me ME. I recovered slowly from this, weaned myself off Ativan (took me three years - but I did it!!), and then found No Panic in 1996
Since then I went on a recovery programme (these are all done on the phone, a kind of tele-conference), Worked myself out and about again and have since learnt to drive, taken my grandchildren on holiday and
such like.I have been a volunteer with No Panic since 1999 and now take groups myself, therefore giving back the help I
received in the first place.
I live in the UK. I consider myself CBT proficient.
