My name is Cheryl and I am a 28 year old female.
I have ADHD myself. I think my dad has it too. I am also a speech
therapist and have counseled a number of students and their parents with
ADHD in my career.
I got diagnosed officially in graduate school although a counselor
suggested it in college. I was having trouble paying attention in long
classes and was getting lower grades than I was used to in lecture type
settings and the result was depression. I started taking Ritalin 2 years
ago which has made a world of difference, I am finally able to live up to
my potential. I also take a low dose of Strattra and Zoloft to manage
concomitant symptoms. I have benefitted from gaining organizational
strategies, and learning about the sensory system components and
treatments (known as sensory integration therapy). Associated symptoms are
mainly disorganization and some obsessiveness. I don't think medication is
everyone's answer ad respect personal choices of folks.
