My name is Angela, I am a 31 yr. old female.
The diagnosis of the eating disorder was when I was 16 and I have suffered with it on and off since then. I have suffered from bulimia, anorexia and compulsive eating. the eating disorder has been the most destructive in my life due to the psychological and physical problems it has created.
The diagnosis of Bipolar II Disorder was not made until 2 years ago. I suffered with frequent hospitalizations which were explained as depression. It wasn't until an astute psychiatrist noticed my rapid speech during a session that the diagnosis of Bipolar was added. I am Bipolar with mainly depressive episodes. The bipolar has affected my life in many ways, from becoming homeless and without a job to having to quit school for a year. Once the diagnosis was made, however, I have been starting to be able to pull my life back together. I am now back in school and doing great. I am working again and living on my own away from my family. I cycle rapidly in the Bipolar disorder and have had many depressed and hypomanic episodes in the last three years. I realize now that I was bipolar since I was a teenager but was never discovered until I started ending up in the hospital for depression.
I have also been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder due to the eating disorder and self-harm behaviors as well as the suicide attempts.
Treatment I have found effective for the eating disorder included being hospitalized on an eating disorder unit which focused on such things as education, body image and nutrition, as well as many other aspects of eating disorders. I have also been in therapy from many different therapists and I have found that Cognitive-Behavioral therapy works best for me. I also went through a DBT program for the BPD, where I experienced much success. I now see a therapist, a psychiatrist, a nutritionist and am getting ready to join another DBT program for the eating disorder.
